We must work for the welfare of elders

-      Dr. Rao Chelikani
Hyderabad: “Everyone in the society must work for the welfare of the senior citizens to enable them to lead a comfortable life during the twilight days of their life” said Dr. Rao V.B.K. Chelikani, president of federation of state senior citizens associations.
Addressing the meeting on the occasion of international senior citizens day organized by Helpage India at People’s Plaza in Hyderabad, Dr. Rao said “It is the life feature of any civilized society to change time to time and accordingly, several changes take place in our day to day life style. The aged people too must change their attitude and lifestyle in tune with the changing times. Everybody must plan their earnings well in advance of their retirement”. He explained several problems faced by senior citizens.
He gave a call to senior citizens associations to act as a mediator between senior citizens and government and try to solve their problems by holding peaceful and purposeful discussions and talks. He also suggested the senior citizens to be aware and make use of the privileges and welfare schemes provided by the government.
“Pensioners, leading their retired life, must be thankful to the society and do their part of social work as responsible citizens. The society must think of welfare of the senior citizens while the latter too must think about the betterment of the society” said Dr. Rao. He explained several subsidies on train and bus fares, housing and health care facilities provided by the government as well as voluntary organizations.
Speaking in the meeting, Aasara GHMC project director, Smt. R. Mamata Bai opined that isolation is a curse for aged people and made an appeal to the elders to mingle with the society and spend their leisure time in social service.
Addressing the meeting, state joint director of Helpage India, S. Das expressed his delight over the unity of several senior citizen associations for coming forward to fight for the cause of senior citizens.
Deputy director, Raja Mahamad said that Helpage India is not confined only to serving the aged but, is also working for the promotion of moral values and value education among the students. MEPMA officer Prabhakar and Asia Paints manager Jayaram and others addressed the meeting.

GENEROSITY OF SENIOR CITIZENS OF ALWAL, HYDERABAD

Hyderabad: Senior Citizens of Alwal celebrated ”World Mental Health Day” on 10th October, 2010. On this occasion, Sri. K. Subbarayudu, president of Alwal Senior Citizens Association,  along with office bearers and  members, visited “Integrated Welfare Society Home For the Aged and Mentally Sick Persons” situated at Sri Krishna Nagar, Qutubullapur, where total 106 inmates are taking shelter right from age 15 to above 60 years.
Sri. Katanguri Venkata Reddy, the founder of society, is a middle aged person serving the poor and mentally ill-people with a great dedication day and night. The self-less service of the Venkata Reddy surprised the Alwal Senior Citizens and they appreciated his services. They handed over the daily useful items such as Lunch Plates, Water Glasses and other useful Utencils, Usable Sarees and Clothes to the founder and director of the society and also promised further help to the society. The senior citizens also distributed the Biscuits to the inmates of the home on the occasion.
But, the donors were moved by the pitiful situation that the inmates do not know anything about the occasion. The mentally ill inmates do not even know their names at least and how they came to the shelter home. The hearts of the elders became warm at the time of leaving the premises. The senior citizens of Alwal promised the home the full fledged support and help on a large scale.
