Silver Citizens meet Chief Minister


Hyderabad: On the occasion of senior citizens’ solidarity day, a delegation led by RN Mittal, president of All India Senior Citizen’s confederation and chairman of Joint Action Committee of senior citizen’s national solidarity day, met chief minister of Andhra Pradesh N.Kiran Kumar Reddy in Hyderabad on 16th August and submitted a memorandum of senior citizens’ charter of demands.
The delegation consisted of Prof. V.Visweswarayya, Dr. P. Vyasamurthy, P.Ramachandraiah, and V. Nageswara Rao.

Senior Citizens National Solidarity Day Observed in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: In a response to the call given by Joint Action Committee of All India Senior Citizen’s Federations to observe senior citizens’ national solidarity day on 16th August, the silver citizens enthusiastically held the public meetings, seminars, group discussions, peace rallies and demonstrations through out the country to show their unity, strength and solidarity. Further, they submitted memorandums to prime minister, central ministers, and respective state chief ministers, ministers of concerned departments, and officials about their demands. 

They conducted a post card campaign and wrote thousands of post cards to the central and state ministers urging the expedite implementation of National Policy on Older Persons (NPOP) and Parents Welfare and Protection Act 2007 in all the states for the protection and welfare of the aged. Moreover, they appealed to the government to increase the old age pensions and bus travel concessions. They also requested the government to build old age homes and recreation centres in all the district and mandal head quarters.

They demanded the government to provide the health insurance policy to all the senior citizens at affordable price.  In various district head quarters of Andhra Pradesh, senior citizens took out rallies and submitted the memorandum to the district and mandal level officials.

Elder’s Welfare Government Making Stringent Act

Hyderabad: “The government has been planning to introduce a stringent act of parent’s maintenance and senior citizens’ welfare act in the state, though it has been taking more time than expected to implement the act” said Anita Rajendra, IAS, commissioner, department of disabled and senior citizen’s welfare, government of Andhra Pradesh.

Releasing the nationwide survey report on “Elders and Crime in India” conducted by the Helpage India on the eve of world elder’s abuse awareness day on 14th June at Press Club, Basheerbagh, Hyderabad, she said “the act has already  been implanted in some districts in the state. The implementation will be extended to all the districts shortly. If the act is implemented stringently, senior citizens will get benefited and protected”.

Addressing the press meet, S.Dass, director of Helpage India, said “The nationwide survey report on elder’s abuse and crime in India, conducted by Helpage India, a charity working for the aged in India,  has revealed some startling facts. The survey was conducted in nine major metro cities in India”. He explained the importance of the elder’s abuse awareness day.

Mr. RN Mital, president of All India Senior Citizens’ Confederation, Dr. Rao V.B.J Chelikani, honourary president, state federation of senior citizens’ organization, Vuppla  Gopala Rao, vice president,  Aasara GHMC, addressed the meeting. Mohd Raza Mohammad, joint director, Helpage India, AP, had welcome the guests. Mrinal Srikanth, senior executive, Helplines, Helpage India, AP, proposed the vote of thanks.

STRATEGIES FOR GROWING OLD GRACEFULLY

  • Choose nutrient-dense foods.
  • Maintain appropriate body weight.
  • Reduce stress and quit smoking
  • For women, see a physician about estrogen replacement against osteoporosis.
  • Use alcohol only moderately, if at all; use only as prescribed.
  • Take care to prevent accidents.
  • Expect good vision and hearing throughout life; obtain glasses and hearing aids if necessary.
  • Be alert to confusion as a disease symptom, and seek diagnosis.
  • Control depression through activities and friendships.
  • Drink 8 glasses of water every day.
  • Practice mental skills. Keep on solving math problems and crossword puzzles, playing cards or other games, reading, writing, imagining and creating.
  • Make financial plans early to ensure security.
  • Accept change. Work at recovering from losses; make new friends.
  • Cultivate spiritual health. Cherish personal values. Make life meaningful.
  • Go outside for sunshine and fresh air as often as possible.
  • Be physically active, walk, run, dance swim, bike, row, or climb for aerobic Activity.
  • Lift weights, pursue some other activity to tone, firm, and strengthen muscles. Change activities to suit changing abilities and tastes.
  • Be socially active-play Bridge, loin an exercise group, take a class, teach a class, eat with friends, and volunteer to help others.
  • Stay interested in life- pursue a hobby, spend time with grandchildren, take a trip, go to the movies and enjoy life.
