Old age is a state of mind; beat it with activities: Governor

Bhuvaneswar: “Ageing is a biological process. Yet old is a state of mind, and one can stay forever young by participating in different social welfare and creative activities,” said Governor Muralidhar Chandrakant Bhandare.
Inaugurating a function organized by India Age Care Trust (IACT) on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons on October 1st, Bhandare said that another way to remain young forever, both mentally and physically, is to remain among children and the youth. He said it is sad that older people face hardship of different dimensions. He said that senior citizens should not let old age be a barrier to living freely. Bhandare urged the Government to open geriatric departments at the VSS (Burla) and MKC (Brahmapur) Medical College Hospitals and also at the district level to help senior citizens get free treatment for their ailments.
He wanted a change in the attitude of the young towards senior citizens and vice versa. He urged everyone to come together to advocate formal protection of the rights of older people as they are a source of comfort, wisdom, safety and mentorship to people of all ages. Former Utkal University Vice-Chancellor Dr Trilochan Pradhan, Dr Prafulla Kumar Rath and IACT founder Dr Manoj Dash also spoke on the occasion. The Governor felicitated noted economist Dr Basudev Sahoo and renowned music director Santanu Mohapatra on the occasion.
