(Kerala): Chief
Minister Oomman Chandy has said that steps would be taken to establish a
separate state department for the welfare of the elderly before December. He
inaugurated the 12th National Conference of the All India Senior Citizens
Confederation here at the RDR Auditorium, Edapazhanji on November 2nd.
He
further said that the state government would formulate state policy on elders.
He made an appeal to the senior citizens to participate in social service
activities during their retired life. “The government is planning to utilize
the experience, wisdom and services of senior citizens for the benefit of the
society. The state government has been
taking necessary steps to distribute free generic medicines to all the patients
in government hospitals” he added.
Minister
for Panchayat and Social Welfare, Dr. MK Muneer, addressing the meeting, said
that the government has been striving to provide social security to the senior
citizens and to setup department for elder’s welfare in the state. “Government
will commence Help Lines and websites for the benefit of the senior citizens.
The state government is also thinking to extend the services of the Anganwadi
workers to the elders at the gross root level” said the minister.
Addressing
the meeting, CPI Parliament Member, MP Achyuthan opined that the welfare of the
senior citizens should become an agenda of every political party. RSP general secretary, TJ Chandrachudan,
chairman Oushadhi and ex-MLA Johny Nellor and other prominent persons
participated in the meeting.
