SILVER CITIZENS-GOLDEN MEMORIES

Memories of Justice P. J. Reddy.

[1910-1999]

Justice Sri. Pingle Jaganmohan Reddy was a remarkable person who inspired others to excel in their chosen fields. He was Judge of the Hyderabad High Court and then of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, later to become Chief Justice of that Court. He was elevated to the Supreme Court and retired from the Supreme Court in January 1975 and returned to his native place Hyderabad. At the invitation of Sri. J.Vengal Rao, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Justice Reddy accepted the office of Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University.

Of his extraordinary and exemplary performance as VC, I recollect one episode- when he held a meeting of the University Senate for approval of the Annual Budget. Sri. M.Narayan Reddy MLA who represented the Legislative Assembly in the Senate, also attended this meeting. He was also the Chairman of the A P Agro-Industries Corporation at that time.

During the meeting, Sri. Narayan Reddy, the first speaker, pointed out many deficiencies in the presentation of the Budget and also made suggestions to make the budget more transparent etc. The VC agreed with him and assured the Senate that the Budget Format will be recast on the lines suggested by Sri. Reddy. Thereafter, the Senate meeting was adjourned for few days.

Later the budget proposals were formulated on lines suggested by Sri.M.N.Reddy. One mornig, the VC took me to meet Sri. M.N.Reddy in his office in MasabTank. When he became aware of the visit by VC, Sri. M.N.Reddy rushed forward to receive the VC in his Chambers and expressed his embarrassment on this visit and protested that he would have come to VC’s office if he had been told. But the VC told him ‘not to feel embarrassed’ and told him that he wanted to visit him in his office to discuss all the points raised by him in the Senate meeting. He also said that he was confident that if Sri.Reddy approved the changed format the Senate would also accept changes. This episode shows a rare courage and humility of which he was the very personification. From this episode, the generations then, and those to come ,can learn about the many noble traits of the great man who set new trends in the administration of the Osmania University in raising the academic standards and showing that a person should always think himself lesser than the institution he serves.

PARENTS ARE PRECIOUS!!

This was narrated at a Seminar recently on one of the HR meets:

Venkatesh Balasubramaniam (who works for some IT company) describes how his gesture of booking an air ticket for his father, his maiden flight, brought forth a rush of emotions and made him (Venkatesh) realize that how much we all take for granted when it comes to our parents.

My parents left for our native place on Thursday and we went to the airport to see them off. In fact, my father had never traveled by air before, so I just took this opportunity to make him experience the same. In spite of being asked to book tickets by train, I got them tickets on Jet Airways. The moment I handed over the tickets to him, he was surprised to see that I had booked them by air. The excitement was very apparent on his face, waiting for the time of travel. Just like a school boy, he was preparing himself on that day and we all went to the airport, right from using the trolley for his luggage, the baggage check-in and asking for a window seat and waiting restlessly for the security check-in to happen. He was thoroughly enjoying himself and I, too, was overcome with joy watching him experience all these things.

As they were about to go in for the security check-in, he walked up to me with tears in his eyes and thanked me. He became very emotional and it was not as if I had done something great but the fact that this meant a great deal to him. When he said thanks, I told him there was no need to thank me. But later, thinking about the entire incident, I looked back at my life. As a child, how many dreams our parents have made come true. Without understanding the financial situation, we ask for cricket bats, dresses, toys, outings, etc. Irrespective of their affordability, they have catered to all our needs. Did we ever think about the sacrifices they had to make to accommodate many of our wishes? Did we ever say thanks for all that they have done for us? Same way, today when it comes to our children, we always think that we should put them in a good school. Regardless of the amount of donation, we will ensure that we will have t give the child the best, theme parks, toys, etc. But we tend to forget that our parents have sacrificed a lot for our sake to see us happy, so it is our responsibility to ensure that their dreams are realized and what they failed to see when they were young. It is our responsibility to ensure that they experience all those and their life is complete.

Many times, when my parents had asked me some questions, I have actually answered back without patience. When my daughter asks me something, I have been very polite in answering. Now I realize how they would have felt at those moments. Let us realize that old age is a second childhood and just as we take care of our children, the same attention and same care needs to be given to our parents and elders. Quality time and politely answering them with out making them wait is important. Now I realize that I must look at their eyes and answer them pleasantly rather than pretending to be reading papers and answering in mono syllables. Rather than my dad saying thank you to me, I would want to say sorry for making him wait so long for this small dream. I do realize how much he has sacrificed for my sake and I will do my best to give the best possible attention to all their wishes.

Just because they are old does not mean that they will have to give up everything and keep sacrificing for their grandchildren also. They have wishes, too.

Take care of your parents. THEY ARE PRECIOUS.

Old People and their role as described in VEDAS

In the Vedas, the old age is the golden (50 to 75 years) and diamond periods (75 to 100 years) of one’s life. The truthful, trustworthy and independent old people of yore speculated thought and observed the various social and physical phenomenons around them. They found greatest ideas of eternal value in the form of Aryankas, (simple laws for the old people) Rta - the cosmic laws of Nature for mankind. Their aim was perhaps to create concord in society and contributed through their metaphysics, philosophy and even Physical sciences and Scientific temper for the welfare of mankind.

Vedic Description of Old age:

Atharva Veda (XIV 1-31 and XIV-2-64 and 71) mentions that young couples should live full length of life together with their children and grand children. Normal age of a person is mentioned as 100 years for those who follow dharma (path of righteousness) and Rta- the eternal laws of Nature. Yajur Veda 3-63 says persons who follow Dharma and Rta can live up to 300 years i.e triya ayusham (triple life). Atharva Veda XI-1-19 say that learned and mighty persons of all divine professions (Varna) should expand to great grandfather/mother and should be able to say “I am the 15th of it”.

Since Ramayana and Mahabharata are Vedas retold, the Grand Old Man of Mahabharata viz. Bhisham Pitamah who was Commander- in- Chief of Kaurva’s Army at the age of about 270 years was perhaps the 15th of the generation and was killed in the great Mahabharata War as he supported the non-divine Kaurvas.

Vedic Prayer and Role for Old People:

In the Vedas, there is prayer for Old people “O God: allot us work to further your Design and Purpose”. Rig Veda 1-124-1, 1-46-6 and 4-33-11 mention the purpose of human life is social welfare and help God in the maintenance of His grand wondrous Design. The Old people should aim at providing permanent truths and value systems to the young people by avoiding toxic emotion of resentment, regret, ego and change such feelings through Vivek (discernment) and tranquillity to love, duty, compassion and forgiveness.

Since many Scriptures and Upanishads confirm the highest meditation is study of Vedas and Bhagavad-Gita says highest virtue is study of Vedic knowledge, Old people can at least spread the Vedic Economics of matter with unsuspected vitality based on dharma and artha, Ramrajya We can all jointly assist God in the maintenance of Grand wondrous Design by avoiding all kind of social, moral and physical pollution.

Governor Narasimhan joins “Aasara”

Hyderabad: Governor Narasimhan has enrolled his name in the “Aasara” programme, being implemented by GHMC for the welfare of aged people. Hyderabad Mayor Karthika Reddy, City Commissioner Sameer Sharma went to Rajbhavan recently to issue him special identity card.

Mayor Karthika Reddy, along with her husband Banda Chandra Reddy, visited Rajbhavan to greet Governor Narasimhan on the eve of his birthday, a few weeks ago. On the occasion, governor made an enquiry with Mayor Karthika Reddy about the welfare schemes implemented by GHMC and then, the mayor explained His Excellency about “Aasara” scheme. Then, Governor surprised Mayor Karthika Reddy by expressing his wish to enroll his name in “Aasara”. He even expressed his wish to supervise the implementation of the scheme. Then, the authorities made immediate arrangements to enroll the name of the governor in “Aasara” and gave him the special identity card. The number of members in “Aasara” has reached 56,359 by the time of publication of this article.

First Tribal Senior Citizens’ Federation in AP

Vishakapatnam: For the first time, a senior citizens’ federation is formed by and for tribals in Andhra Pradesh. This federation was formed at Chodavaram, Visakhapatnam District, AP on 19^th October, 2010 with the initiative of “Helpage India”. It is a milestone in the history of senior citizen’s movement in Andhra Pradesh.

“Voice of Senior Citizens”, the monthly newspaper for senior citizens, congratulates the tribal senior citizens on this occasion for forming the federation, which is a symbol of growing consciousness among tribals in remote areas such Chodavaram, a predominantly tribal area.
