Elder Abuse in India

STARTLING REVELATIONS ON ELDER ABUSE
          Nearly 50% of the elderly are financially dependent on others.
          About 35% of the elderly have experienced abuse, in the form of disrespect, verbal abuse, neglect and economic abuse.
          About 30% of the elderly face abuse because of lack of emotional support and lack of basic necessities.
          40% of the elderly feel neglected everyday. They feel that their family members are busy with their own work / lives & neglect them.
          Over 50% of the elderly are unwilling to take action against abuse in future, for the following reasons:
o          20% of them do not even know what constitutes abuse.
o          The belief that nothing concrete will happen if they take action.
o          A sense of shame within the community.
o          Fear of further abuse.
