The life of rural aged is miserable: Collector Sandeep Kumar

(From our correspondent)
Karimnagar: “The situation of aged people living in villages is very miserable and pitiable and hence, senior citizens associations and voluntary organizations must play an active role in the elevation of such people” said Sandeep Kumar Sulthaniya, collector of Karimnagar. Participating as the chief guest in first anniversary meeting of District Senior Citizens Welfare Association, held at Krishi Bhavan, Karimnagar District head quarters, held on 2nd April, he said “The conditions of aged people living in urban areas is satisfactory to an extent. But, the life of the aged people in rural areas is quite miserable. Several social changes such as the break down of joint family system contribute to the current situation. The aged are missing adequate love and care by their family members. According to the present trends, the aged people too must mould themselves in such a way that they should not depend entirely on their children.
In past, children used to take special care about their parents but now, the situations are changing rapidly. Everyday, I receive two or three complaints from senior citizens that they are not being cared by their children. The collector suggested that there should not any kind of negligence about the old age and one must be sound both financial and health wise.  Everybody must work towards the salvation of the problems of senior citizens. The collector said that he too will extend his support for such people.
Addressing the meeting, Dr.RaoV.B.J..Chelikani, president of Federation of AP Senior Citizens Organisations, said “The activities of senior citizens must expand even to rural areas also. Welfare and health schemes for senior citizens introduced by government must be brought to the notice of common people”. He desired that senior citizens association must be established in each and every Mandal.
Similarly, special programs must be designed in order to extract useful services from skilled senior citizens. He suggested that senior citizens must work in co-operation with the local red-cross societies, homes for elders, and other voluntary organizations. He briefed the audience with several Parental care and Protection laws. He suggested that enough care must be taken for the establishment of aged homes in districts. Keeping aside personal egos and prestige’s, educated senior citizens must work collectively with a great integration. Steps must be taken towards the establishment of the situation where senior citizens can lead their lives happily in the twilight of their lives.
Delivering his speech, Puchhidi Mohanreddy, former MLA and president of Karimnagar district Senior Citizens associations, expressed his concern about the growing indifference towards the aged people in the society. He opined that loneliness that aged people face is a bane in the evening of their lives and hence, they must take active part in senior citizens associations, at least to get relief from their loneliness. He suggested aged to cultivate habits like reading and spiritual practices and also to spend their leisure time with equal aged and like minded people. He requested the collector of Karimnagar to invite senior citizens to various government celebrations. He made an appeal to the senior citizens to make use of all the incentives provided by government.
Dr. Samudrala Janardhana Rao, General Secretary of Karimnagar Distirct Senior Citizens Associations, presented the first anniversary report and briefed about the annual activities of the organization. He said that the association has, as on day, 410 members of whom 190 are issued identity cards. The report briefed about the several activities of the organization such as medical camps and yoga classes. He thanked all the persons who extended their support for making the programs successful.
