People must fight for good governance: Governor ESL Narasimhan

(By S. Chandrashekara Reddy)
Hyderabad: “Good governance is possible only when people get educated and fight united” said Mr. ESL Narasimhan, the honourable governor of Andhra Pradesh. He opined that it is only people who are encouraging corruption in the system and wished that such attitude must change. Inaugurating “Forum for Good Governance” on 10th May, at Administrative Staff College of India, he suggested that priority sectors should not be completely privatized. He expressed his concern about the falling standards in education system and opined we have to blame ourselves for degrading the standards of the education system.
Addressing the meeting, the governor said “Sarawathi, the Goddess of education, has become the Goddess of Lakshmi and as a result, bogus educational institutions, run by private individuals, are mushrooming in the state. Often, students make a queue at Rajbhavan, complaining that they were refused hall tickets as they could not pay the examination fee. Some of them are even threatening that they would become naxalites. This trend will change only when the government offers quality education to the students”.
“There is a code of conduct for everybody including politicians, police and civil servants. But, I could not understand why there is no such code of conduct for Governors. People must come forward to vote for better leaders, rather than sitting at home and watching T-20 serials. In several instances, government doctors are referring patients to private hospitals as there are not adequate facilities in government hospitals” he further mentioned.
The Governor said that some people with vested interests are misusing Right To Information (RTI) Act. He condemned the attitude of media for giving high priority to sensationalism rather than publishing genuine public problems. He appealed to the media to publish news only with proper research at field level.
Delivering the keynote address in the meeting, V.S. Ramadevi, former governor of Karnataka, stated that there is no fault with our electoral system but, it is only politicians who are making mockery of our democracy. She further said the political corruption begins with elections and people are encouraging it by selling their valuable votes for money. She expressed her anguish about the declining moral standards in present political system.
Releasing the brochure of Forum for good governance, Justice A. Laxman Rao, the former chief justice of high court, said “Political parties must take an active part in politics in a democracy. No body can deny their importance. But, the voice of people must emerge as supreme power. In developed countries, a government can not survive with anti public governance. Our rulers are indifferent towards the salvation of public issues in our country even after sixty years of independence. Even opposition parties are neglecting the intensity and the actual dimension of the public problems and are trying to derive political mileage by politicizing the issues. In our country, 90% of the people are struggling for earning daily bread and have no time to think about the problems of our society and nation. Remaining ten percent people are engaged at just making money. Hence, intellectuals have to come forward to educate the common people and urge them to take an active part in good governance movement. He appealed to the media to propagate the ideology of intellectuals among the common men. People must fight united for good governance”.
Former DG C. Anjaneya Reddy explained the aims and objects of the forum for good governance. Justice Reddappa Reddy, former judge of the high court, presided over the meeting. M. Padmanaba Reddy, retired IFS officer and the secretary of forum, presented the vote of thanks. Well known social activists, intellectuals, and retired civil servants participated in the function.
