Memory walk 2010 on World Alzheimer’s day

Walk to promote awareness among people

Hyderabad: A memory walk was organized on the occasion of world Alzheimer’s day by Alzheimer’s and related disorders society of India (ARDSI), Hyderabad Deccan Chapter and Memory Clinic, Department of Neurology, Nizams Institute of Medical sciences on 12th September, 2010 at Jala vihar, on Necklace road in Hyderabad.

Addressing the gathering, Principal secretary, Medical and Health Department, Government of AP, Dr. PV Ramesh said: “Rs 5 crores under national rural health mission has been earmarked for senior citizens and this amount would be used for the purpose. As part of the campaign, government is planning to organize Alzheimer screening camp for the elderly to help detect the disease in the early stages”. He appreciated the ARDS for creating awareness among the public.

Speaking to the gathering, Dr. Suvarna Alladi, president of ARDSI, said “There are an estimated 35.6million people with dementia in 2010, the number nearly doubling every 20 years. In India, 4.48 million people are affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia. In twin cities alone, there are 40,000 elder people suffering from Alzheimer’s. Emotionally speaking in the meeting, Ruksana Ansari, Secretary, ARDSI, explained the activities of society.

Former Badminton player Pullela Gopichand participated as guest of honour and inaugurated the memory walk and praised the services and efforts of the organization. GHMC commissioner Sameer Sharma, ARDSI vice president Mrs. Bala, treasurer Sashidhar, Aasara GHMC project director Mrs. Mamata Bai, co-ordinator Lankapalli Srikanth Mrinal and Sreedhar of Hyderabad Cycle Club and other prominent persons participated in the memory walk. Near about 400 senior citizens, youths, and students participated in the walk with a great enthusiasm, demonstrating the placards and banners.

The organizers said the aim of memory walk is to create awareness among the people about the Alzheimer’s and dementia disease.

• Be physically active, play games, walk, run, yoga, dance
Understanding Dementia
• Dementia is a disease of the brain that causes progressive deterioration in thinking, memory and every day abilities.
• Dementia is a normal part of ageing
• Alzheimer’s disease and stroke are two most common causes of dementia in India.
