Senior Citizens must fight united

There are 90 million people, who crossed sixty years age, in our country and they make 8 percent of Indian population. According to the estimations of United Nations Organization(U.N.O.), this will reach 20 percent by 2050. However, the central and state governments and political parties are indifferent towards the problems of aged people. The laws and legislations related to senior citizens are confined only to papers and gathering dust. “National Policy on Older Persons”, announced by central government in 1999, is not even being implemented at minimum level in several states. The governments, which deliver very lengthy lectures on the problems of senior citizens, are not allocating adequate funds for the welfare schemes for aged in their budgets.
Government’s attitude towards the senior citizens is like “making tall promises and showing empty hands”. Amid such a situation, it is the timely need for senior citizens to think about the economical, social and health problems for aged. They should not expect somebody to come down from heaven to solve their problems. They should fight on their own for solving their problems and must take clue from the slogan “Elders For Elders”, given by HelpAgeIndia. Hence, senior citizens associations should come forward and fight united, ignoring their personal egos and conflict of views. The Welfare of Senior Citizens must become the common agenda for all the associations. Well educated senior citizens must come forward and play an active role in strengthening the movement of senior citizens.
